Warnie loves a Beer

Well someone had to say it....

Australia have unearthed Xavier Doherty 2.0, by naming another left arm slow bowler for the first Test. Michael Beer. Shane Warne apparently a big fan.

The name itself is certainly an improvement although I was a Xav fan (as my 7 year old was lucky enough to be the Milo In2Cricket kid that received a medallion from Xavier on the MCG a few weeks ago, during the National Anthem, in that ill fated ODI against Sri Lanka...but that's another story and I don't talk about one dayers here.)

I remember that back in '06 or '07 we debated on this very blog whether Australia would remain a winning side after the retirements of Warne and McGrath. I seem to remember praising the likes of Strauss, Cook, Bell, Pietersen and Anderson quite highly and predicting that they would form the core of a resurgent English squad. (Swann and Trott were nowhere in the picture back then, of course.) I also predicted that India would enjoy a (probably brief) reign at the top of the Test table because, for a few short years, they would benefit from the intersection of a batting line up dominated by aging, but still world-beating, middle order stars and a bowling attack dominated by relatively young, but effective, seamers. All these predictions appear to have come true... Strange, huh?
